Jianhe 剑和 - Character Concept Design

This design was inspired by my desire to learn more about my own heritage and Chinese culture itself, along with the folklore of Zodiac animals, which this project will be ongoing! I still have a lot to learn, beyond the capsule and great thanks to friends and family who offered their knowledge as well. I hope to continue to expand the (mysterious, yet small) world that Jianhe inhabits alongside the other 12 Zodiarts in Xingbao!

Jianhe, the Zodiac's Rabbit Clan New Leader! Alongside his ShengDi who provides him the power of wielding a wukong-style calligraphy pen that bends and allows for fluid movement in combat. Basket allows him to put the Rabbit + other art utensils.

Jianhe's name, 剑和, which roughly translates to the "peace by the sword", foreshadows his eventual role within the 12 Zodiarts. Had a lot of fun brainstorming names with friends and family!

I originally had the idea of merging Victorian fashion with Chinese fashion (hence the hats, wide shapes, etc), but focusing more on the zodiacs + cultural influence initially felt more prominent. The vest in the final design did lend itself through.

My original iterations for the rabbit was more complex but lend little room for Jianhe to take the spotlight. Thus, it became more simpler - not needing exaggerated features in order to establish a character as important through sheer glamour.

Testing out the dichotomies between Jianhe and the rabbit.

The clash of warm and reds were a great touch; however was incredibly busy when factoring in golds, whites, and blacks in the final design.

Before advancing, I wanted to do one more quick iteration to explore any other possibilities. I really liked the floating ears, which was very spirit like!
